The Tinnitus People

Thursday, November 26th, 2009

When Tinnitus sufferes are surrounded by a very loud noise, they can hear a resounding ringing in the ears or loud buzzing sound. People with tinnitus are affected by unbearable loud sounds, even though these sounds are not bothersome to others. With the use of a brain-imaging device called the functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging or fMRI, researchers find out that the hearing centers in the brain of people with tinnitus are more active than normal people. This means that their hearing a more sensitive to sounds than normal.

One of the most common treatments for this condition is through Tinnitus Retraining Therapy or TRT, a broadband noise to treat tinnitus. This training the ears to listen to soft levels of sounds for a given period of time everyday, this will help in their tolerance to sounds. The doctor will first identify the level of loudness discomfort level and through that, they can pattern the sound treatment until you achieve a tolerable level.

One way of preventing ringing in ears is to avoid noisy places. Concerts, sporting events and other events can create a lot of noise which is not good for your ear. Avoid going to those places. Also, when you listen to music using electric devices or watch TV, turn the volume down so that the sound would not harm your ear.

There are actually very little is known about this condition relatively to other hearing problems. some tend to over react about it, some are shocked and also some panics a lot, actually, this is not good according to researches, because, people became more stressed out and will most possibly have sleepless nights because of worrying so much, so instead of helping themselves to overcome the problem they worsen their conditions

Breaking the Tinnitus Habit – a How to Guide

Wednesday, November 25th, 2009

In regards to breaking the tinnitus habit, I recently received an email from a reader who writes…”I try to keep myself busy and do things that i enjoy but it seems that my mind is always locked onto the sound. Are there any tips you can give me that helps break this habit? I’m at the point where I’m truely trying to accept my tinnitus and sometimes I can and other times I can’t. I know it can’t hurt me, but I fear that I will have to suffer the rest of my life with it.”In answer to this question, “Are there any tips you can give me that helps break this habit?” I must first say that, most definitely, it is a habit to focus on Tinnitus. In fact, I suspect you’ve gotten so used to focusing on it all the time that it’s a habit that would be incredibly hard to break. But, not impossible! So, how do you break a bad habit? There is only one way to do this. Add habit forming positive routines to your day that are equally habit forming. When you do this, your new habits will override your old ones. This process is much much easier when you are fully aware of your destination. Even though life is not about the destination but about the journey, knowledge of your true destination makes it easier to focus every day on doing something that leads you to that destination. When you do this your mind will turn away from the negative tinnitus and be turned towards doing what it is you really want to do.What do you want? I’m mean really want? ie: fame, fortune, peace, success, money, companionship etc etc…. Take some time and figure out what it is you really want and then make daily habits that lead you to that destination. Good habits. Because, good habits are just as easily formed as bad ones.Let’s step away from tinnitus for a second and talk about another easily formed bad habit. “Lack of Exercise” which is a big problem in Western Society. You know it amazes me when I ask people at the gym, “how are you?” or “how’s it going.” Most of the time I get the response, “not bad,” or “I’ll feel better when I’m done” or “I hate the gym and I can’t get out of here fast enough.”For those people I know that I will see them very very infrequently. Why? Because, you can’t be good at something you hate. It’s impossible. When I first started going to the gym it was hard at first but I made it into a habit. Now, everyone around me knows that from 8:15 am to 10am every Monday, Wed and Friday I’m at the gym. No one questions that. Why? Because it’s a habit and everyone respects that. As a result, it’s something I can count on to give me time away from work, from family and friends to be by myself and doing something good for my body. That’s how to make anything a habit. Learn to love what it is you don’t necessarily like to do, because it’s good for you! And, it is leading you to the destination of healthy living. Now, let’s take a look at life. If I have a really big goal it makes it so much easier for me to form habits that chase that goal. What is my goal? To play at Carnegie Hall! Now that’s a big goal. Will I ever get there? Who’s to say, but I believe I will. But, even if I don’t, I’ll get 5,000 percent further than if I never adopted that goal or ever learned anything about actually achieving it. And, it doesn’t matter anyway. Why? Because I’m focused on the goal and forming good habit to meet that goal that takes my mind of the negative stuff like Tinnitus. What’s the really good news? You tinnitus will actually get better (lower in volume) by not focusing on it. Trust me, I know this works. One final word. Avoid saying things like, “I fear that I will have to suffer the rest of my life with it.” This is the worst thing that you can do is say something like that. Why? Because you’re focusing on what you don’t want…and you’re just going to get more of it whether you like it or not.Right now, form a new habit by putting your intention forward and adopting new phrases like…”somewhere someone has been cured from their tinnitus, tomorrow it could be me.” The universe understands what you want and what you don’t want equally. When you weight your statements on the side of what you really want you’re going to get more of it!I noticed that you downloaded my “6 Top Ways to Reduce the Ringing” eReport. You’re only on chapter 2. Have you adopted the first 2 lessons? Can and will you make them a habit. I promise that if you make them a habit you will heal over time.Lessons 3 through 6 are also new habits to be formed. You must do them. If you do not take the initiative because of your “fear” then there is little I can do for you. But, I have a feeling that you can and you will adopt these habits. Your sanity depends on it.

Tinnitus – The Ringing In The Ears

Wednesday, November 25th, 2009

Although not common, some tinnitus patients report that they hear beeping or tunes and songs in their ear or the whooshing sound of the sea. Tinnitus can be something that can go for long periods of time intermittently, or it can also be continuous and non-stop. Most patients who seek medical help to relieve them of the sound suffer from continuous and prolonged ringing. In cases like those, the disorder can cause great anxiety in the patient.

One way of preventing ringing in ears is to avoid noisy places. Concerts, sporting events and other events can create a lot of noise which is not good for your ear. Avoid going to those places. Also, when you listen to music using electric devices or watch TV, turn the volume down so that the sound would not harm your ear.

pulsative tinnitus is very uncommon and usually, patients with this tumor experience other simultaneous sounds different from the pulsatile noise produced. These sounds persist even after removal of tumor. This condition is called “subjective tinnitus”. If a patient is exposed on a sound that is no longer hearable, still they can hear the sound. On the other hand, should the same patient be asked to focus on their own tinnitus only, they can hear the sound even if the noise is very loud. This indicates that in subjective tinnitus, patients will only hear what they try to hear. Complaining patients cannot simply ignore their tinnitus since the noise can be heard both in quiet or noisy surroundings which can become very meddlesome in their daily lives.

Doctors recommend that you do the following steps if you want to prevent ear ringing: avoid too much intake of salt; control your blood pressure; avoid too much intake of caffeine, colas, tobaccos and other stimulants; Exercise regularly; and, Give enough time for rest and try to avoid fatigue.

I hope this article gave you some more knowledge about tinnitus and more points of view about this condition. It is possible to cure or at least to significantly decrease tinnitus symptoms. There are ways to treat it, western-modern and alternative. Some will say one method is the best others will recommend on something else. The Nature Of Tinnitus

Tuesday, November 24th, 2009

It is important to understand the nature of tinnitus. Often, it is not an illness in itself but a side effect or symptom of an underlying problem. A series of tests can be done in order to identify whether the constant ringing of the ear is caused by an onset of hearing loss, Meniere’s disease, fluid infection or an inner ear defect. A CAT scan or MIR can also be done in order to rule out a brain tumor or aneurysm. In some rare cases the ringing of the ears is a symptom of a neurological or heart problem.

In some clinical observations, an actual sound can be recognized from the patient’s ear, and this is known as “objective tinnitus”. Objective tinnitus is caused by muscle spasms that produce clicking or cracking sounds in the middle ear. It was also observed that some patients experience “pulsatile tinnitus”. It is the sound that beats in time with the patient’s pulse. Pulsatile tinnitus results from altered blood flow or increased blood turbulence near the ear. It can also result from enlarged awareness of blood flow in the ear. In very rare cases, pulsatile tinnitus may be a symptom of different dreadful conditions such as the carotid artery aneuryson.

The ear ringing disorder may be classified into five types. First is the tonal type characterized by continuous ringing in the ears akin to one single note playing like a broken record. Then there’s the pulsatile tinnitus with continuing pulses in synchrony with a person’s heartbeat. In the tinnitus of the third kind, sustained roaring, buzzing, ringing, whistling, or hissing is experienced. The fourth tinnitus type is marked by beeping sounds similar to Morse code signals or musical notes. In the fifth, and probably the worst type, many different kinds of noises are heard all at the same time.

My conclusion is that its possible to fight tinnitus, and even win. The first step is knowledge, most of us, even those who suffer from this trouble problem dont know enough. When one obtains enough knowledge a solution is at hand.

The most common cause of tinnitus is exposure to high intensity noises such as loud machineries and high levels of music. Tinnitus, if not treated during its early phases, could result to permanent damage. Fortunately, preventive methods are always available for those who do not want to suffer the fate of having tinnitus. Attending loud concerts is a common cause of tinnitus. Avoid watching and going to places that create loud noises. If you must, wear necessary ear protection such as ear muffs and ear plugs to ensure the safety of your ears.

With all these prevention techniques, you can be tinnitus-free and live a normal life without fear of having that frustrating ringing of the ears.

Tinnitus – The 3 Emotional Stages

Monday, November 23rd, 2009

It is a vicious cycle because tinnitus causes stress and anxiety and is also worsened by stress and anxiety. Worrying over the tinnitus can cause it to become worse. Lack of sleep due to ringing in the ears leads to fatigue which makes the ear ringing worse. These are just some of the mental and emotional side effects of tinnitus.
Expel tinnitus and the roller coaster of emotions:
At times it may be more annoying for people who do not know what is wrong with them or who have non-supportive doctors that tell them to “get over it” or to find a way to live with tinnitus.
Many people with a hissing in the ears, like me, will discover that it completely interferes with natural essential functions of their lives. You may have a hard time concentrating, remembering things, listening to others and focusing on tasks. This makes it nearly impossible to function properly on a job or in society.
Many people with tinnitus go through the same process as people with other medical conditions and disorders. At first you may feel denial, then anger and frustration (especially if you are being told there is no cure and nothing will help) and then you may feel hopeless and depressed. You will think why this had to happen to you and harp on the fact that your life will never be the same. Next comes fear.
You may worry that you will never live a normal life again, fear that this ringing in the ears will cause havoc with your job and your family, fear that you will never be able to enjoy the same things and fear that you are going crazy or that there is something mentally “wrong” with you. At some point along the way if you hope to find relief, you will need to find acceptance.
Acceptance- With acceptance comes the realization that while you do have this condition and there is no cure for ear ringing, that doesn’t mean you have to be a victim for the rest of your life.
You will soon come to the realization that there is hope for your tinnitus and that you have stopped focusing on the ear ringing all the time you can allow your body to start the recovery. Also one should also take note of the fact that this roller coaster of emotions does not only effect the tinnitus sufferer but their families as well.

Tinnitus – the Marriage Killer

Sunday, November 22nd, 2009

If you have tinnitus (ringing ears), like I do, my experience tells me that you likely have a great deal of difficulty with relationships. Why? Because not only does the tinnitus drive you crazy, it can also make feel very much alone. You feel isolated because it often feels like no one can understand your suffering.
The doctors don’t really seem to understand. Your friends and co-workers don’t understand. And, most importantly it seems like your family doesn’t understand. You feel like no one can possibly understand and therefore you tend to lash out at the people closest to you.
You need to be aware that the ones you love are equally suffering right along side of you. You need to know that they feel just as helpless as you do because they know there is nothing they can do. They want to save you from your private torture chamber, but they can’t. All they can really do is hold the space while you try and figure out your next course of action.
And so, you are faced with a choice. You can continue on your present course and hope for a different result. That’s what many people do. The do the same things day after day and always get the same result. Or, you can actually begin to learn what works in reducing your tinnitus volume. In order for me to share what I have learned after 7 years with tinnitus, I need to tell you a little bit about my story.
I had been happily married for 8 years before I got tinnitus. When I did get the Tinnitus it almost drove my wife and I to divorce. My marriage was not simply strong enough to withstand that kind of pressure. The reason for this was that our marriage, at that time, was based mostly around romantic love. This kind of love cannot withstand serious challenges because romantic love is like a drug. Your body produces chemicals that make you to feel euphoric, energetic and great. It’s the equivalent to experiencing a natural high. But, when that drug wears off; everything bad that you felt before you took the drug returns.
So, along with my tinnitus came an opportunity to learn what real love is. And, as I gained more knowledge, our love grew into something much deeper than romantic love. It grew into a spiritual partnership. Gary Zukav (author of Seat of the Soul) defines Spiritual Partnership as “a partnership between equals for the purpose of spiritual growth”.
Unfortunately many people are addicted to romantic love. They continue to seek it with no understanding that they are addicted to an illusion. When you fall out of romantic love you think love is gone, but it’s really only the illusion that is gone. In order for any relationship to evolve beyond romantic love, both partners must evolve as human beings.
For my wife Nancy and I, Tinnitus was a beacon in our life experience to help us work towards that evolution. As we evolved as human beings, we evolved in our partnership. And, as I learned more about spiritual partnerships, the more I was able to heal the emotional, spiritual, mental parts of myself. Then my physical world, including the world of tinnitus, began to change. It was an awakening of sorts. You can learn to do this by becoming aware of your thought processes, your internal dialogue, your physical habits and your emotions. Awareness is the key.
As our marriage got stronger, my tinnitus diminished. We discovered a deeper sense of identity, a greater feeling of spiritual connectedness and purpose and a renewed commitment to both our personal growth and to service. With that said, in order for your relationship to evolve, both partners must be willing partners and commit to their own personal evolution for the partnership to grow. Remember, it takes equal partners.
You can actually choose to allow tinnitus to remind you that you need to get beyond where you are at now and align yourself with a higher purpose. You are now being compelled, by force, to find your greater self and to heal yourself. And once you do, you will notice a greater quality of life all around you. Your relationships will change, your marriage will get stronger, your kids will be drawn closer to you, and everything and everyone around you will change for the better. It all starts with the realization that tinnitus is here as a beacon in your life for you to learn to be a happier person, a better spouse and a true friend to all those you encounter.

Tinnitus in the Morning – Better or Worse?

Saturday, November 21st, 2009

Many people with tinnitus complain that the ringing they hear is often worse first thing in the morning than at any other time in the day. Why is that and what can you do about it?

Conventional wisdom holds that when you lie down for extended periods of time there is more blood flow to the brain. Since the brain is responsible for the sound you hear, the ringing noise is heightened because of the extra blood flow.

It also seems louder in the morning because there is much less ambient noise then at any other time during the day. Therefore, because of these 2 occurrences, your tinnitus appears to be louder.

However, conventional wisdom will only take you so far. In other words, just knowing the cause does not necessarily equate into a workable solution. In fact, it’s just the opposite. More often than not, knowing that your tinnitus will be louder in the morning will actually cause you to immediately focus your mind on it as soon as you wake up.

The mind wants to feel bad. It’s the way you’ve been conditioned. The mind is addicted to negativity. Therefore, as soon as you regain so-called consciousness in the morning, your mind automatically gravitates to what’s wrong. Then it seeks out situations to prove that it’s right. It says, “see, I told you tinnitus is a bad thing.” Then when you try to do something about it the mind says, “not now, I’m busy. Can’t you see I’m focused on tinnitus? I’ll wait till later to feel better.”

So, just knowing that you brain does that, seeks out negativity, how does that help you? That’s what most people struggle with. Even if they know that’s what the mind does, it’s often too difficult to fix. Why? Because, most people don’t have a clue how to stop it.

You have always been a victim of your past, as the mind sees it. Past experiences get stored in your sub-conscious. As soon as you’ve experienced anything, your mind makes a file called “past experience #890765” and, when that situation comes up your mind seeks out that very computer file and uses it to strengthen itself. The mind says, “ah, another morning with tinnitus, great! Another excuse to feel bad.”

So, what can you do? Here’s what I did and still do; get up, get moving and get focused on anything that you can do that you love to do. For example; if you love to takes walks, take one first thing in the morning. If you love to play the piano, sit down and play the piano. Whatever it takes to get your mind off the tinnitus, do that. The worst thing you can do is to lie in bed and focus on your tinnitus until it makes you into its permanent victim.

Sure, your mind wants to focus on your tinnitus. I know that from experience. But, it’s up to you to stop it. Taking a different kind of action will help. But, that action must be performed from only 1 of 3 positive energy modalities; acceptance, enjoyment or enthusiasm.

Because everything is energy; thought, feeling, doing, living, breathing, wind, rain, sun, fire, ice, water, sleep etc., you must realize that only positive energy will cancel out negative energy. Your thinking about tinnitus is negative energy. Therefore only 1 of the 3 energy modalities I suggested will get you out of your negative mind and into happiness.

The least level of energy that you can use is acceptance. Complete 100% acceptance that your tinnitus is here to stay is the first step. But, you must accept it without resistance. As I’ve said before, resistance stops the positive flow of energy. What you resist will continue to persist.

Acceptance, on the level of energy, causes real consciousness to occur. Real consciousness on the level beyond form (what you can see, hear, taste, touch and smell) is that all-knowing universal wisdom that oversees everything that you do. Your personal growth and happiness depends on this consciousness to take hold and witness your life from the level of the “formless”.

You are the director in the play. That is consciousness. There person, who you think you are, is the actor in the play. Therefore, you can direct the actor, from the level above form which is the level of the formless. That is the level which, as a human race, we must reach if we are to survive.

Knowing that you must accept tinnitus is fine but, you must go beyond that and direct your form self to behave differently. Direct the actor to do something which will get you what you want. Allowing the actor (your doubting mind) to improvise is just plain wrong. Your mind will improvise you to death. Don’t allow it to do that.

Give universal direction. Give direction from the level of formless consciousness that resides deep within you. I know that you know it’s there. You must tap into that creative magnetic energy and make it work for you.

If you continue to wake up every morning and allow your mind to improvise and gravitate toward negativity, you will be doomed for the rest of your life. Nothing will change.

On the other hand, if you choose to alter your behaviour and direct the actor from a position of positive power you will change the direction of your life. You may not see results instantly, because you’ve not yet trained yourself to get the full effect. But, you will see results, only up until your mind goes back in the other direction and starts whining and complaining that you don’t yet see any results.

Simply let go, and let it happen. I’ll be there to help keep you on track as much as I can. Fell free to write me and let me know how it’s working for you.

Tinnitus = Ringing

Saturday, November 21st, 2009

Tinnitus is a Latin word which literally means “ringing”. And what better way to describe the condition known as tinnitus. It is the ringing in the ears, usually taking the form of soft whistling, high-pitched noises, whining, cricket-like sounds, waves, the “swoosh” of the wind, hissing and other sounds which are not commonly heard in the environment. Tinnitus could be alternating or irregular or it could be recurrent. Continuous cases of tinnitus can be very annoying which could cause extreme anguish to the sufferer.

Various mental conditions have been connected with tinnitus. This is because some people suffering from severe ringing in the ears can feel isolated when the noise hinders their daily routines. However, tinnitus is not a mental disorder. It would be best to seek counseling for the depression and seek help to cope with the noise. A good tinnitus treatment would be masking. Learning to drown the noise inside the ears or head by using external noise is good way to cope with tinnitus.

Various electronic devices can be used such as clocks ticking or TV or radio hissing. Comforting music or meditation music can also be used in order to drown out the ringing in ears.

The most common cause of tinnitus is exposure to high intensity noises such as loud machineries and high levels of music. Unfortunately, many people today ignore the proper care of their ears and are insensitive to the potential damage that could be done in result to exposure to high intensity noise.

I hope this article gave you some more knowledge about tinnitus and more points of view about this condition. It is possible to cure or at least to significantly decrease tinnitus symptoms. There are ways to treat it, western-modern and alternative. Some will say one method is the best others will recommend on something else.
